Peter Eastgate Poker

November 11th, 2008

Peter Eastgate is a well known Danish poker pro. He hails from Odense, Denmark and is a regular on both PokerStars and Ladbrokes. His preferred game is short-handed games as well as heads-up games where he normally plays as high as $200-$400. While Gus Hansen is easily recognized as Denmark’s biggest poker start, Eastgate is ranked as one of the top five online players from Denmark.

Although well known in the online poker world, Eastgate is a relative unknown in the live poker world. His first cash was at the PaddyPower Irish Open in 2007 when he finished 9th in the Main Event. He made $61,224 for his finish, but that would be his only money finish live in 2007. In 2008, Eastgate only had one money finish going into the World Series of Poker. He made the money in the EPT Scandinavian Open where he finished 32nd for $14,860.

Eastgate entered the Main Event of the World Series of Poker the old fashioned way, by putting up the $10,000 entry in cash. He then navigated his way through a massive field, which included busting both Brandon Cantu and Tiffany Michelle on his way to making the “November Nine.” At 22, he is the youngest player at the final table. Eastgate entered the final table fourth in chips with 18.375 Million. If he were to somehow find a way to win the event, he would become the youngest player to ever win the Main Event, eclipsing Phil Hellmuth’s mark.

Eastgate typically plays online by the online handle “Isser.” He originally went to college to pursue a degree in Economics but soon left college for poker. His pursuit of his degree coincided with his first solid run as a poker player and he found his poker too much of a distraction. As a result he gave up his education for poker, a move which he does not regret.

Eastgate brings a lot of aggression to the table. His “no fear” style of play can result in very dramatic swings. He says that he tries to take advantage of player weaknesses and plays his table according to how the table dynamic is setup. Pro Jacob Rasmussen was asked about whether Eastgate was like Gus Hansen and he said, “Not really. It’s more like Gus Hansen is the first Peter Eastgate.” This is high praise for such a young professional.

A lot of players and professionals look for Peter Eastgate to play heads-up and even win the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event. His fearless style will likely keep him in contention throughout. Although his live resume may not be that robust, this online pro has definitely put in his dues in the online world and looks to step forth into the live poker spotlight. It will be interesting to see where Eastgate finishes at the Main Event and where his poker career takes him afterwards.
